Lane Pate is this week’s athlete of the week for his performances during the week of March 21-27. Pate’s best game came on March 27 as he got the start for the Panthers in their first game of the day. Pate threw a no hitter for Jemison going the full seven innings and giving up no hits, no runs, two walks and struck out 12 Saks High School hitters in route to a 3-0 win.

“He mixed speeds really well, and he was able to throw both of his pitches for strikes when he needed to,” Jemison coach Jason Easterling said. “He did a really good job executing on pitches.”

Pate was productive at the plate for the Panthers as well, going 1-for-3 in both games of the doubleheader on March 21 and posting a double in game one. On March 22 in a 15-1 win over B.B. Comer High School, Pate was 3-for-4 with an RBI and scored a team-high four runs.

However, Pate’s week was made with his stellar performance on the mound on March 27 when 62 of his 95 pitches found the strike zone during his no hitter.

“He has been pretty solid for us all season,” Easterling said. “He has been reliable day in, and day out for us.”

 

Honorable Mention: Cannon Miller, Chilton County High School

Cannon Miller has established himself as the Tigers’ ace pitcher this season, and he had arguably his best outing of the season on March 21. In an AHSAA Class 6A Area 5 matchup with Calera High School, Miller got the start and held a 5-1 lead going into the seventh and final inning. The senior gave up three runs, but he settled in to strike out the final two batters to secure the area win for CCHS.

Miller threw seven complete innings giving up eight hits, four runs, two walks and struck out 14 Calera hitters. He was 2-for-3 with a double at the plate as well.

Miller’s momentum continued further into the week going 1-for-3 with an RBI and a walk on March 23. On March 24, the senior went 1-for-2 with a solo home run and two walks.

The Tigers doubleheader on March 27 saw Miller go 2-for-3 with a home run, three RBIs and a run scored in a 15-0 win over Plainview High School in game one. He followed that up with a 1-for-3 effort in game two and added three RBIs to his totals.
