The Thorsby High School baseball team got a come-from-behind win on Feb. 22 scoring the game’s last five runs to beat Montevallo High School 10-7.
The Rebels were led by senior Remington Taylor who went 4-for-4 at the plate smashing a home run, tallying a double, driving in two runs and scoring another pair. Taylor is batting above .700 this season, and the win got Thorsby back to 2-2 to start the 2023 baseball season.
“(Remington) had a huge game for us,” Thorsby coach Drew Wood said.
Montevallo got on the board first in the first inning, but the Rebels put three runs across in the bottom half of the first to lead 3-1. Thorsby added another run in the second inning to extend its lead.
Montevallo fought back, roughing up starting pitcher Aiden Seeley for three runs in the top half of the third inning to tie the game at four. Montevallo got three more runs in their half of the fourth inning to stretch the lead to 7-5. Thorsby committed some defensive lapses that led to runs that was more of the cause, rather than Seeley missing his location.
“He showed his toughness tonight, and some of the stuff that led to runs for him really should have been outs. He got better as the game went on,” Wood said.
Seeley settled in after that and did not allow a run the remainder of the game. He pitched into the seventh inning and was pulled for reaching his pitch limit. Seeley did his fair share at the plate as well, going 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs.
“He battled all night and Montevallo swung the bat well, but he kept fighting, making pitches and getting outs and kept us in the game,” Wood said.
While Seeley settled in on the mound, the Rebels offense sprung back, plating a run in the fourth inning, three runs in the fifth inning and a run in the sixth.
“Our guys never quit, they battled the whole time and we were able to string together some hits at the end to put us up,” Wood said.
Gavin Parker and Aiden Niamon each had a double and scored two runs. Niamon had two RBIs and Parker had one. Malachi Allgood and Braylon Carroll each had an RBI as well.
Thorsby bounced back from losing both games at St. James School in Montgomery on Feb. 20 by a combined five runs with the win over Montevallo.
“It is just a bunch of young guys, and they are trying to learn and not make mistakes,” Wood said. “If we take care of the mistakes, we have a shot of being pretty good.”
Thorsby plays Fayetteville High School on Feb. 25 at 1 p.m. at Verbena High School in their next ballgame.
