There are so many things in this world that are divisive. Deep rooted things such as politics or viewpoints that everyone sees day in and day out, and light-hearted things like sports which I see on a daily basis.

Everyone is guilty of holding grudges at some point over something, even myself. If you are a Duke University fan in anything, and I mean anything, then I probably have somewhat of a grudge against you. It can be something as small and silly as that, or sometimes it is more serious situations that put people at odds.

However, this Thanksgiving I hope everyone came together again to forget their differences to enjoy each other’s company around a table full of delicious food. There is no better way to get on the same page as someone than over a plate full of carbs.

At the Chilton County Commission meeting on Nov. 22, I really connected with what commission chairman Jimmie Hardee had to say to close the meeting. Hardee challenged the commissioners to get away from their work during Thanksgiving and separate work from the time being spent with family. For me, covering so much stuff for work can get overwhelming at times. I am thankful I got to travel back to North Carolina to spend Thanksgiving with my family While I was there I tried to do what Hardee challenged the commissioners to do and separate work from my family, and it was really nice to be able to just enjoy company instead of worrying about a deadline or someone getting back with me for a story.

It is important to remember to take time away from work not only during Thanksgiving and the holiday season, but throughout the year every now and then. It helps reset the mind, and it can rekindle the love for the job that may get lost sometimes after long hours. The time away from work for a few days was much needed, but I look forward to getting back to Chilton County to cover all the Christmas events and festivities communities have planned.
