Many in Chilton County are starting to plan their participation in Halloween candy giveaways and fall festival events.

While the candy is reserved for the children, sometimes those participating will give out something else for adults, such as cider, doughnuts or useful information.

Residents are never too old to get in on the fun. Several adults embrace the fun of Trick or Treat the Streets in Clanton and Treats on Main in Maplesville by dressing up in costumes while they hand out candy. New for this year, Jemison is having a fall festival event on Oct. 15 at 3 p.m., and there are likely to be some decked out in costume at this event as well.

Costumes do not have to be elaborate to be fun. Last year, for a fall festival type event at a local church, I went as the younger adult version of Ellie from Disney’s “Up.” The costume was simply jeans, a white dress shirt and a bandana, but it was made complete by the Adventure book I carried like Ellie has in the film. The previous year, while covering Maplesville’s Treats on Main, I simply wore a penguin hat to get it on the fun.

Community Halloween events here are always well attended and aim to be a fun time for the whole family. Last year, an entire family dressed up as skeletons to attend a local candy giveaway.

There is still time to pick something fun to dress as and sign up for an event to share some joy at this month.

Those interested in participating in the Trick or Treat the Streets should contact the Chilton County Chamber of Commerce at info@chiltonchamber.org prior to Oct. 25 to reserve a spot. The event will be Oct. 31, 5:30-7 p.m. For those in Maplesville, Treats on Main is more of a first come, first serve event as far as spots to give out candy go. However, more details are available by calling the town hall at 334-366-4211. The event will be Oct. 31, 5-6:30 p.m.
