The Jemison City Council will be looking to appoint someone to District 3 following the resignation of Councilman Allen Wilson.

Wilson resigned at the Sept. 19 meeting because he no longer meets the requirement of living in the district.

“In no way does it have anything to do with being dissatisfied or unpleased with the city and the leaders of the city,” Wilson said. “It is just something that was unforeseen, so I will be stepping down as of this date. I am very grateful for everybody that has worked with me. Everyone accepted me with open arms and made me feel like an integral part of this city council. I am very appreciative of that.”

Wilson was appointed to the council in October 2020 to fill the vacancy created by the death of Robert Morris.

Each of the council members thanked Wilson for his service on the council.

Mayor Eddie Reed said it was “with a heavy heart” that he accepted the resignation because he and Wilson have been friends for a long time.

He thanked Wilson for service on the council and to the community.

“You have been a great council member and supporter of Jemison,” Reed said.

The first step in filling the District 3 seat will be for the council to officially declare a vacancy. An appointment to the seat can then be made within 60 days of the announcement. If an appointment is not made in that time, recommendations would need to be submitted by the council to the governor.

Also during the meeting, the council approved closing a portion of Main Street for a fall festival-type event to be hosted by business owner Tiffany Gaines and her team. The event is scheduled for Oct. 15 from 3-8 p.m. Reed asked Gaines to get with the Jemison Police Department to work out specific details.

Additional holidays were added to the Jemison calendar as days that city hall will be closed, including President’s Day, Juneteenth and Columbus Day.
