The newly formed City of Clanton Arts Council is looking for artists who can demonstrate their skills at the free Artober Fest in downtown Clanton from 6-9 p.m. on Oct. 8.

The focus is to have artists creating a new piece, whether it be a painting, sculpture or other visual art, during the festival.

“We have heard of other towns and cities doing this and the success that they had with it, and I think with the mission of the Arts Council really wanting to promote artists and creativity, this is just an opportunity for kids and young adults to really see what goes into (being) an artist and their craft,” Arts Council president Debbie Street said.

This opportunity is open to visual artists and musicians.

The deadline to register is Sept. 16. Applications are available on the City of Clanton Arts Council Facebook page. Those with questions can contact Street at dstreet@al.gov or 205-755-6840.

Artists in paint, sculpture, wood and a guitarist are among those who have signed up.

Street said she would also like to see caricature and leatherwork artists join the lineup.

The City of Clanton Arts Council has recently received its official nonprofit status.

“We are working in partnership with the city, the Chamber, the MACC (Merchants Association of Chilton County) … it is really just another part of the puzzle to build the arts and entertainment in Clanton,” Street said.

Artober Fest will take place in the downtown Arts and Entertainment District with Sixth Street North being closed from Clanton City Hall to Third Avenue, and Second Avenue will be closed from City Hall to Highway 31.

There will also live music and food trucks at the event.

“It’s really a great date night,” Street said.

Inside City Hall, a fall festival art class for children in kindergarten through fifth grade will be offered by local artist Deanna Lawlis. Registration is required, and the deadline is Sept. 16. Cost is $15. Registration forms are on the City of Clanton Arts Council Facebook page. Space is limited.

“Parents can drop of their children for that two-hour period, that way they can go and enjoy the festival,” Street said. “The kids will get a snack, and they will learn how to make a canvas pumpkin. It is just a great opportunity for parents who have young children.”

Police officers will be on the premises for security.
