Coosa Riverkeeper, a nonprofit dedicated to preserving the river and helping those who enjoy it stay safe, will host a fundraiser and meet and greet at Lake Mitchell on Aug. 13 from 1-8 p.m. rain or shine.

“The idea was how can we put together an event that would not only help people get to know their neighbors, but also get involved in our work,” Justinn Overton of Coosa Riverkeeper said.

The event will feature live entertainment, food and a silent auction.

Nashville’s Weekend Jimmy and the Easy Party Band will be playing throughout the day with presentations by Coosa Riverkeeper personnel.

“We are going to have different members of our board and staff talking about our work as well as educating the public about some of the potential impact of the proposed graphite mine in Coosa County,” Overton said.

Some of these concerns include the potential impact on water and air quality.

A silent auction will be held featuring items highlighting Lake Mitchell and local businesses. Overton said this would include art, photos of the lake, a hand-painted canoe paddle, experience opportunities and more. Items are still being accepted for the auction. Those interested in donating an item can contact the nonprofit at info@coosariver.org.

“We would really like stuff that highlights local businesses,” Overton said. “… Things that are Coosa-centric is encouraged.”

One of the auction items will also be the chance to go on a boat patrol with Coosa Riverkeeper.

“We just want to get people out on the river and thinking about what it means to them,” Overton said.

There are a limited number of tickets available for $40 at coosariver.networkforgood.com/events/43598-get-involved-lake-mitchell. (This site also includes location information.) Dinner, including Boston butt and classic sides, will be served around 5:30 p.m.

Overton said those who want to just dock their boat and listen to the music are asked to donate to the organization here.

There will be plenty of parking for cars at the event.

Overton said she was “very grateful” to those who had purchased tickets.

Lake Mitchell has been selected as a focus for 2022 by the organization as a part of its strategic plan.
