The STEM Academy at LeCroy Career Technical Center provides students a variety of opportunities in technology, engineering and robotics.

STEM stands for science, technology, engineering and math.

Students put what they are learning into practice through hands-on projects.

This semester, one project had a festive spin as students designed and manufactured ornaments for the holiday season.

Once they finalize their design they create a vector file. Finally, they use a CNC laser to cut their designs out of various materials.

“This is yet another example of how the students are learning about manufacturing processes through hands-on activities,” said LCTC instructor Jason Sosa.

LeCroy Career Technical Center STEM students also recently completed a campus sign project.

“The STEM students have been learning about the various manufacturing processes and this project provided them the opportunity to practice machining first hand,” Sosa said.

The students were first tasked with identifying where signage was needed around campus. They then manufactured the signs using a CNC router that they have been learning to operate. Once the machining of the signs was completed, the students helped to install them around campus.

Students of Lecroy Career and Technical Center’s STEM program are instructed by Sosa and Mr. James Jones. The LCTC STEM Academy began in 2009. The Academy utilizes Project Lead the Way, CODE.org, and Alabama State Department of Education engineering curriculum for high school students. Students can choose from many different Engineering Academy courses that focus on teaching, problem solving and utilizing the engineering design process. The LCTC STEM Academy goal is to prepare students for the increasing technological demands of the global environment. The students enrolled in the program will utilize math, science, technical writing and computer skills as they explore different areas of engineering. This program serves as a platform for students who wish to pursue an engineering or technical degree after high school.

Students also have the opportunity to join the Technology Student Association.

TSA serves as a means to enhance classroom instruction while helping students develop leadership abilities, expand workplace-readiness skills, and broaden opportunities for personal and professional growth. Club Affiliations: Technology Student Association, Project Lead The Way, CODE.org, VEX Robotics, Electrathon America, Girls Engaged in Math and Science, and Mate Rov.

Students can express interest in STEM during their sophomore year by completing a Program of Interest form. The form is typically open during National Career Tech Month in February.
