Week one of the 2021 football season is in the books, and three local teams pulled out victories to start the season. With Thorsby defeating Jemison on Aug. 19 and Verbena beating Central Coosa on Aug. 20, here is a look at how some of the other games in Chilton County went down.

 

Maplesville High School 14

Highland Home High School 13

 

The Maplesville Red Devils survived a close game with Highland Home to secure an opening night victory.

The game featured two tough defenses, both of which played an excellent game. However, Maplesville was able to put together a huge touchdown drive in the fourth quarter, capped by a Brady Harrison touchdown run, and the defense was able to stop a game-winning two-point conversion play to hold on for the victory.

Harrison was the star of the game for Maplesville, rushing for 122 yards and two touchdowns.

 

Central of Clay County 34

Chilton County High School 7

 

CCHS was unable to pull out an upset victory on the road over Central of Clay County in its opener. The Tigers fell behind early, and ultimately could not put together enough on offense to keep pace with the Volunteers.

Rashard Childers and Jamon Dejarnett led the team on offense. The two combined for 94 yards on the ground. Kevin Staffney Jr. scored the team’s lone touchdown on a fumble recovery that he took back 20 yards for the score.

 

Fyffe High School 30

Isabella High School 6

 

The score may indicate a lopsided loss for the Mustangs in its opener, but there is much to like about Isabella’s performance against Fyffe.

For starters, Isabella lost to Fyffe a year ago by a much worse score. They lost last year’s season opener 48-0.

Following that loss, the Mustangs reeled off nine wins in a row to end the season, and then advanced to the third round of the playoffs.

In this game, Isabella fell behind 24-0 in the first half, but played Fyffe to a 6-6 tie in the second half.

Also, Isabella getting on the board against one of the best teams in the state is an accomplishment. Garrett Price broke into the end zone for the team’s lone score.

What is clear from this game is that Isabella matched up much better against Fyffe than they did a season ago. Given what happened after last season’s loss, it is scary to think about what Isabella is capable of this year following a much better outing against Fyffe.

 

Billingsley High School 13

Prattville Christian Academy 0

 

The Billingsley Bears started their season off strong with a shutout victory over Prattville Christian. The win marks the second season in a row that Billingsley beat Prattville Christian in its season opener.

The Bears defense was suffocating the entire night, not giving up one point to the Panthers.

Billingsley now has an opportunity to start off its season with a 2-0 record for a second straight season when it hosts Vincent High School in week two.
