R&B Sanitation will end its garbage pickup in Maplesville on June 28.

The company submitted its resignation for providing garbage service to the Maplesville Town Council during the June 16 meeting.

Town Attorney Hollis Jackson advised the council that an interim company could be named as an emergency measure, since the resignation created a public health issue if trash were not picked up.

The Town Council unanimously approved declaring a town emergency for garbage pickup and gave Mayor W.C. Hayes “authority to negotiate with a respected contractor” for service until the garbage service bid opening on July 12.

Council member Patty Crocker was absent.

The Maplesville Town Council had been researching bidding the service out since December 2020.

At that time, the company had requested a rate increase because of increased cost and was working for the town on a month-to-month basis without a formal contract.

Specifics for the garbage service bid were finalized at the May 10 meeting and bids will be opened at the July 12 meeting at the Maplesville Town Hall at 6 p.m.

Meetings of the Maplesville Town Council are open to the public.
