Months with a fifth Friday are a special time for the Chilton County United Way’s thrift store.

On May 31, the CCUW will continue its tradition of a fifth Friday sale of the items it has in its store.

All items at the store have been donated, and the CCUW is asking for help to get more donations prior to the fifth Friday sale.

Clothing is a popular item donated to the thrift store.

Thrift store sales go to the Chilton County Emergency Assistance Center, which operates with the main objective of helping those in crisis situations by providing food and other items.

According to a press release, there are several examples of how the Chilton County Emergency Assistance Center came through in a big way to help those in need.

On May 21, a couple traveling from Tennessee had four flat tires and had spent all their money, so the emergency assistance center paid for their stay at the Days Inn in Clanton until they were able to get money wired.

Someone came in to the emergency assistance center on May 3 with a skin disease and had a prescription from a doctor but could not afford it and had no insurance. The center bought his medicine.

Typically, the assistance center helps a specific person pay for their prescription every three months.

Recently, another person came into the assistance center looking for clothes after getting custody of their five grandchildren.

The only clothing they had was what they were currently wearing.

They were allowed to go through the thrift store and pick out five sets of clothing for each child.

“These are just some of the examples of how we help the needy of Chilton County,” CCUW campaign coordinator Carol Fortuna said.

Donated items are asked to be brought by the emergency assistance center located at 502 Enterprise Road in Clanton by May 30.
