The Thorsby girls basketball team picked up its eighth win of the season with a resounding 50-31 victory over Central-Coosa on Jan. 10.

The Rebels connected on five 3-pointers in the game, including three from Carlee Wyatt in the first half as Thorsby built a 21-11 halftime lead.

Wyatt had a team-high 15 points and was one of five Thorsby players to score at least six points on the night.

Joining Wyatt in the scoring parade was Emily Jones with 11 points, Karlee Kincaid with seven points as well as Hannah Smith and Madisyn Ellison with six points apiece.

Thorsby was really able to grow the lead in the third quarter as a result of applying full-court pressure.

Senior Destinee Scott provided major minutes off the bench and was instrumental in guarding the player inbounding the ball along the baseline.

“I’m more of a defensive player, and I’m always trying to get the ball back [for the offense],” Scott said.

Her length and active hands made it a routinely difficult task for Central-Coosa to successfully put the ball in play without turning it over.

“It’s all about just making sure that they know there is someone big in front of them and intimidate them [into making a mistake],” Scott said. “It seemed to work out real well for us.”

Scott has embraced her role and understands that she can help set the tone for the team along with the other seniors.

“It’s about realizing that everyone needs to hustle,” Scott said. “The seniors are who I always looked up to, so I know I have to step up my game.”

According to Scott, one on the areas of the game that she has seen the most improvement is her ball handling skills.

The Rebels have surpassed their win total from a year ago with an overall record of 8-3. They currently sit tied atop the area standings at 3-0 along with Reeltown, who Thorsby hosts on Jan. 14.

“We’ve had a young team the last couple of years and those girls have gotten older and improved a lot,” Scott said. “I think that’s the difference between this year’s team.”
