The Chilton County Commission held a budget work session on Sept. 17.

County administrator Sylvia Singleton informed the Commission that there was $44,564 left in a miscellaneous category, and the group discussed what action to be taken with the money moving forward.

The Sheriff’s Office and road department are two of the largest county departments with 71 and 41 employees respectively.

The Commission decided not to do anything with the miscellaneous money for the time being.

According to Chairman Allen Caton, the Commission is being required to do a legal compliance audit and financial audit of previous years and have been given a timetable to get a plan together.

Chilton County was one of a list of counties that were sent notice letters by the state auditor.

Commissioner Joseph Parnell said that there could be some findings just based on the problems that the Commission office has had maintaining staff in recent years.

The audit has to be performed by a governmental accounting firm, and the financials have to be sent in a Governmental Accounting Standards Board (GASB) report.

The county have gone through a compliance audit before for years 2008, 2009 and 2010. Only two findings came back from it.

“Whatever it falls back on, all we can do is whatever it takes to move forward,” Commissioner Jimmie Hardee said. “This is not out of the norm. We just have to get our house in order.”

The Commission agreed to vote on a final budget at their next meeting on Sept. 24.

Also explored was the possibility of moving the meeting dates from Monday to Tuesday. Many holidays fall on Mondays.

County attorney Fletcher Green will research and look into any laws that may have language against it.
