All community service-minded individuals are invited to attend an informational meeting to discuss the formation of a new Lions Club in Jemison.

The meeting will be held at noon on Jan. 28 at Jemison City Hall. A light lunch as well as snacks will be provided.

Lions Club International is the world’s largest service club organization with more than 1.35 million members in more than 46,000 clubs in 211 countries. The Lions’ motto is “We Serve.”

“We’re always striving to grow our membership, and to bring in new clubs in our community being that the population can support,” said George Head, Central District Governor. “Jemison is an area of growth, and as such, we feel it can support a Lions Club.”

The Lions Club was founded in 1917 by Melvin Jones in Chicago, and has since impacted millions with service.

Lions are most widely known for their service work with the vision impaired, providing eye examinations, glasses and surgeries to those who are in need but may not be able to pay. Additional core areas of service include youth and children needs, feeding the hungry, and environmental projects.

“It only takes 20 members to start a new Lions Club and be recognized among Lions International,” Head said. “There is only one requirement, and that is you must be of legal age, and for the state of Alabama that is 19. There are membership dues so you must be able to pay those as well. And you must be willing to serve.”

Chilton County has two existing Lions Clubs: Clanton Lions Club and Clanton Evening Lions Club.

Each local Lions Club determines the service activities for their club.
