Winning score: Keyshawn Jemison and his Panther teammates begin the celebration after the senior scored the game-winning touchdown against rival Chilton County.

When Jemisons’ football team went into the locker room for halftime on Thursday trailing rival Chilton County High School 21-6, the Panthers knew exactly what they needed to do.

They needed only to take an approach based on their mantra: “One more.”

Instead of the stakes, playing in front of a raucous Panther Stadium crowd in the first game of the season for both teams, the JHS players focused on making one more defensive stop or scoring one more touchdown.

It worked, as Jemison rallied for a 34-28 win when senior Keyshawn Jemison ran in nine yards for a touchdown in the second overtime.

A fellow senior, offensive/defensive lineman Brandon Stokes, said the team never doubted it could come back and win.

“We knew all week that if we could get into the fourth quarter, we could take it,” Stokes said. “To go out like that as a senior, with a double overtime win over Clanton, you can’t beat that.”

Visiting Chilton County High School struck first, with a 11-yard run by Austin Dennis with 8:06 remaining in the first quarter.

Then, Chilton’s Corbin Bice ran it in from 17 yards out with 10:33 on the clock in the second quarter.

Trenton Bishop recovered a fumble in Jemison’s end zone for a touchdown after his punt pinned the Panthers deep.

Stephen Horn added the extra points after all three scores to make the tally 21-0 Tigers.

JHS got on the scoreboard with a 20-yard Keyshawn Jemison run with 4:44 left until halftime, but the point-after try was no good.

John Underwood scored a rushing touchdown for JHS moments into the third quarter, and Keyshawn Jemison ran in the 2-point conversion to make it 21-14.

If the Panthers didn’t have the momentum at this point, they did when Randy Satterfield intercepted a pass and ran it all the way back for a touchdown.

JHS trailed 21-20, but the hosts recovered a fumble on the ensuing kickoff, and Kevin Nunn passed 29 yards to Satterfield for a touchdown on a fourth-and-10 play.

Bailey Sammons ran in the 2-point conversion.

Keishun White answered for Chilton with a 12-yard scoring run that would tie the game.

CCHS blocked a Jemison field goal attempt at the end of regulation, and both teams were stopped short of the goal line in the first overtime.

The win was the first for Jake Hogan as Jemison’s coach.

“This team does not quit,” Hogan said. “We overcame a little bit of adversity in the first half, and we kept fighting and we kept executing. I couldn’t be prouder of my guys, I really couldn’t.”
