The Jemison City Council appointed Margaret Cobb and Richard Childs to the city Zoning Board on Monday.

Mayor Eddie Reed said the reason the names needed to be appointed was due to some residents requesting a zoning meeting scheduled for Tuesday night.

Although the meeting ended up being cancelled due to the residents no longer wanting to meet, Reed said it was important for Cobb and Childs to be appointed to the Zoning Board.

The Zoning Board will now include, Clyde Northcutt, Lake Gilliland, Andy Davidson, Marion Smith, Richard Childs, Bobby Tucker and Margaret Cobb.

Councilman Robert Morris said he knew each member on the board and that it was a great group of people.

Reed said the group meets only when a zoning interest occurs and there was some interest, but he was not at liberty to comment on the particular interests at this time.

Councilmen James “Jim” Henderson, Robert Morris and Sam Reed, along with Mayor Reed, voted in favor of appointing Cobb and Childs to the Zoning Board. Councilmen George Brasher and Rex Bittle were absent from the meeting.

The council also voted to amend ordinance 02-17-06 setting penalties for the violation of the city animal ordinance.

The amended section states that anyone under violation of the ordinance shall be punished upon conviction by a fine of no less than $25 and no more than $500.

The ordinance also states that the violation could result in imprisonment to the Chilton County Jail for a period not exceeding 90 days, or be fined and imprisoned. Each day in which the violation continues shall be deemed a separate offense.

Cobb asked if the new ordinance changed the meaning of the animal ordinance requiring animals to be on a leash or behind a fence.

Reed said the amended section merely dealt with penalties for those who violated the ordinance and it was still a city ordinance for animals to be kept on a leash or behind a fence.

Reed concluded the meeting by reminding everyone that April 22-26 was Jemison’s annual clean-up week.

Employees of the city of Jemison will pick up all unwanted household items, such as old furniture and other things that are not included in garbage pick up.

Reed stressed the city will not pick up car batteries, tires and hazardous chemicals.
