A health fair on May 4 will be part of two local men’s effort to do good throughout Chilton County.

Chilton Medical Center has sponsored a county health fair in the past, but with the center being closed to patients and its immediate future uncertain, the organization took on a support role for this year’s fair.

Instead, the event is being organized by Erric Price and David Reiter, whose plans for service to the county go beyond even the fair.

The two men are raising money for Thorsby School and Lomax Assembly of God’s Speed the Light Ministry. They plan to hold the fair as part of an ongoing fundraiser that will also include participating in the Ironman competition on May 18 in Woodlands, Texas.

After the Ironman event, Price and Reiter want to present donations of $15,000 each for the school and charity.

“I think we’re going to exceed that,” Reiter said. “We’ve gotten a very positive response. Almost half our booths are taken up, and we haven’t even told anybody about it.”

Price is an investigator with the Chilton County Sheriff’s Office and has completed two previous Ironman events.

Along with raising money for the non-profits, the health fair is intended to promote the veterans organizations in Chilton County and inform residents about access to local care.

Reiter is a retired Naval officer who is active in several different veterans groups. He said he’s seen memberships decline and that veterans of the recent conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan don’t know how much the organizations can help. So, these groups will be highlighted at the fair.

Health care providers will also be present at the fair, as will be plenty of opportunities for local families to have fun.

“We want to have a full-blown fun day,” Reiter said.

The event will include many different vendors, including arts and crafts, face painting and food. Attendees should also look for a 1-mile fun run, a silent auction, inflatables and horse rides.

The health fair is scheduled for 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Thorsby’s Richard Wood Park.

The event’s finances are being handled through the U.S. Corps of Chaplains, a registered non-profit organization, so all donations are tax deductible.
