Anna Calhoun, a graduate of Chilton County High School, has been named co-captain for the Million Dollar Band Crimsonettes for the coming school year.

The announcement comes as Calhoun nears the start of her senior year at The University of Alabama.

While the exact criteria used to determine the two captains has not been revealed to Calhoun, she said the announcement was made by the Crimsonettes coach and the Million Dollar Band director.

Calhoun said the honor is usually given to a fourth-year Crimsonette. She will serve along with Colby Free of Tuscaloosa.

“Just to see my name on the list of Crimsonettes was an exciting moment, but to have the coach call me and say, ‘Not only have you been selected for the team, but we have also selected you to be one of the captains for this year.’ It was really a dream come true to know that they felt like I could lead the team and do good job of being a leader for the girls on the team,” Calhoun said.

Despite the future of college football being uncertain because of the COVID-19 pandemic, Calhoun is hopeful and looking forward to the football season and being with “all my band family.”

Calhoun said she would find out more about what the leadership role will require at the meeting for section leaders closer to the start of the school year.

She said being captain is really about “being that morale leader making sure everyone is there on time and (has) a positive attitude.”

She said it will also include selecting the practice uniforms and possible media interviews to represent the team.

“I am very thrilled about the girls that we have this year, and I am looking forward to the year we have ahead,” Calhoun said. “People always say your senior year is always your best year and so far, it is looking pretty promising.”

Members of the Crimsonettes try out each year to be selected for the team. Calhoun has been selected each of the previous three years she has tried out.

“I think what I have enjoyed the most is getting to go to all these different places,” Calhoun said.

Performances have taken her across the United States, giving her opportunities to visit new states and stadiums.

Calhoun is an accounting major. After graduation, she plans on attending graduate school and eventually becoming a certified public accountant.
