As a sports fan, I am beginning to see the slightest glimmer of light at the end of the tunnel that is the coronavirus pandemic.

The light began to flicker after news broke earlier this week that Major League Baseball was in discussions about a contingency plan that would go into effect as soon as the virus started showing signs of being under control.

Baseball is not the only sports league to have been talking behind closed doors, but they seem to be showing the willingness to be creative during desperate times.

Some of the ideas that have been thrown out there include the possibility of holding games for every team at one central location.

When I first heard this I immediately thought they were crazy, but then again, some of the best ideas in human history were first thought to be insane or were laughed at.

It didn’t take me long to quickly support such a plan, even if it meant playing in front of no fans and using robot umpires.

One of the reasons I am all for any such plan is due to the world’s need for sports.

If you think about it, a sporting event has the ability to bring people together more than just about anything else in the world.

There are few common threads that people can enjoy, but sports is indeed one of them.

Although the plan to play at a central location in front of no fans is not designed to bring people together, it will help with the overall mental health of America.

Watching sports allows people to remove themselves from the pain and heartache of reality. At the moment that relief is missing, and its absence comes at a time when we could use it the most.

Finally, I am glad to see baseball is the one leading the charge and sparking conversations.

There’s a reason why it is known as “America’s pastime” because it has helped pull the country out of the doldrums on several occasions, including playing a large part in helping the nation heal after the Sept. 11 attacks.

The bottom line is our country and the world is in dire need of some live sports to watch and the sooner it comes the better.
