Isabella ground game pounds Fultondale

The Isabella Mustangs earned another impressive win by going on the road and defeating 3A playoff team Fultondale (7-2) 34-21 on Oct. 24.

Cole Atchison and Lance Price each had huge games on the ground, as the two combined for 284 of Isabella’s 353 rushing yards on the night.

The duo also accounted for all five of the Mustangs’ touchdowns in the contest.

Isabella charged out of the gate firing on all cylinders and led 20-0 following three first quarter scores.

However, Fultondale fought back and narrowed the margin by having success through the air before the IHS defense eventually adjusted their approach to combat the opposing passing game.

Defensive pressure was key to the final outcome. Dalton Mims, Anthony Fjeldstad, Caleb Washington and Reid Mitchell each had sacks, while Kendall Reeves intercepted another pass.

Mitchell leads the county with 11 sacks, and Reeves leads the way with eight interceptions on the season.

No passes were completed in the game for the Mustangs.

With the win, Isabella improved to an overall record of 9-0.

 

Jemison scores most points since Sept. 12

The Jemison Panthers lost their seventh-straight game of the season following a 48-19 loss to Shelby County (2-7, 2-4) on the road on Oct. 24.

However, despite the same result on the record the Panthers (2-7, 0-6) offense was able to score the most points it has in the past five games.

That is a positive sign and something Jemison can build on with one game left to play.

At this point, any success is important because it can help set the tone for the offseason and start next year’s journey off on the right foot.

The Panthers will end the regular season on the road against West Blocton, which is where head coach Blake Bradley was an assistant last season.

 

Verbena, Billingsley lose big

The Verbena Red Devils and Billingsley Bears both proved to be overmatched in their week nine games.

Verbena (2-7, 0-6) fell 33-8 to Loachapoka and Billingsley (5-4, 4-2) was shutout 56-0 by Lanett. Both games were played on the road.

It was the second-straight loss for the Bears and dropped them into a tie for second in the Region 4-1A standings.

However, due to head-to-head tiebreakers Billingsley will finish third in the region and travel for the first round of the AHSAA playoffs.

Technically it was only Verbena’s fourth loss in a row after picking up a second victory earlier in the week following a forfeit by Highland Home due to the playing of an ineligible player.
