Thorsby edges out Vincent for region win

The Thorsby Rebels finished strong and earned a narrow 28-20 victory on the road against Vincent on Sept. 20.

The Rebels led 22-20 heading into the fourth quarter and scored once more with a touchdown in the final quarter to extend their lead for good.

It was a balanced attack offensively for Thorsby, which was led by quarterback Brody Barnett, who completed nine of 12 pass attempts for 89 yards and a 37-yard touchdown to A.J. Smith.

Barnett also attributed to the majority of the Rebels’ success on the ground with 133 rushing yards on 18 carries.

The 37-yard touchdown reception was Smith’s only catch of the contest, but he also split carries with Jacob Lockhart.

Lockhart and Smith each ran the ball eight times for a combined 61 yards.

However, Lockhart proved to have a nose for the end zone with a pair of rushing touchdowns.

Brent Jones and Chris Arledge tied for a team-high with 10 tackles. Koby Davis was not far behind with nine tackles of his own.

Davis, Jones and Sawyer Sellers each had a sack on the night, while Tyler Ray was a nightmare for Vincent in the secondary with two interceptions.

 

Morrow runs wild, Maplesville pounds Keith

Maplesville followed up an emotional victory against Linden with a 56-6 blowout win on the road against Keith on Sept. 20.

The Red Devils put together four touchdown drives in the first half to go up 28-0 at halftime.

Maplesville’s offense gained 503 total yards, which included outgaining Keith 392 yards to 21 yards on the ground.

Ryan Morrow was a major reason for the rushing success, as he exploded for 274 yards and four scores on 15 carries.

After leading 7-0 at the end of the first quarter, Maplesville scored 21 points in both the second and third quarters to open up a 49-0 lead heading into the fourth quarter.

Jackson Abbott threw for 111 yards and completed touchdown strikes to Kayln Hardy and Caleb Hobbs of 35 and 25 yards respectively.

Ajala Robinson and Brady Harrison each ran for a touchdown in the contest. Harrison and Latrell Wilson received the second-most carries behind Morrow, with six apiece.

Several Red Devils were tackling machines on defense with Robert Sheffield, Timber Lenior and Jacob Johnson each registering double-digit tackles.

Sheffield led the way with 14.5 tackles, 14 of which were of the solo variety.

Hardy corralled his first interception of the season.
