The Thorsby Town Council approved a budget of $1,739,600 for the 2019-20 fiscal year during its meeting on Sept. 16.

The total budget is $156,522 less than the figure approved for last year’s budget.

Councilman Glenn Littleton asked if the town’s revenue had “flatlined” from the previous year. Town Clerk Crystal Smith verified that it had.

It was stated that Mayor Robert Hight and Smith had worked on the details of the budget for about three weeks in an attempt to find the best option available for the town.

The new budget takes into account a 3% raise for all full-time town employees, which had been approved by the Council at a previous meeting.

In other news from the meeting:

• Thorsby Fire Chief Josh Parker informed the Council of the department’s plans to host a movie night at Richard Wood Park. “Hocus Pocus” will be shown following the Swedish Fest activities on the night of Oct. 12. They will look into possibly having food vendors at the event.
• Nick Turner and Blake Turner have shown interest in joining the Thorsby Police Department.
• A mail truck recently ran into a fire hydrant near the intersection of Michigan Avenue and Summit Street. “It has done more damage than we originally expected,” Public Works Director Terry Jackson said. His department is in the process of getting it fixed.
• The fire department will begin testing fire hydrants in October, so Jackson warned residents that could cause fluctuations in water pressure.
