Discount retailer Fred’s announced via a press release on July 12 that it will be closing even more stores on top of the ones announced in April and June.
Multiple media outlets report receiving the release, which includes the Fred’s at 300 Park Plaza in Clanton as among the 12 stores shutting their doors in Alabama.
“While it is never easy to make decisions that impact our valued employees and customers, this initiative represents another necessary step in our continued efforts to stabilize our business by simplifying our store portfolio and product assortment,” Fred’s CEO Joseph Anto said in the release.
Over 400 locations of Fred’s have now been placed on the chopping block, including 12 in Alabama on the latest list.
The Clanton location survived the lists released in April and June, but the local store has been marked as closing in the latest statement.
Multiple locations in Alabama are set to remain open as of now, including in Columbiana and Montevallo.
The company said in the release that around 80 stores and all remaining pharmacy locations across the country will remain open.
The Clanton Advertiser reached out to the Clanton location of Fred’s for more information on July 15, was redirected to a corporate number and did not receive comment by press time.
Many locations that have been marked for closing began clearance sales on July 12, according to USA Today.
The company also said in the release that some of the closing stores may reopen under a new operating model.
