The Town of Thorsby will once again participate in the Back to School Sales Tax Holiday set for July 19-21 after a unanimous approval by the Town Council at its June 17 meeting.

Approving the holiday is something the Council has routinely done.

It will be the 14th time that the Alabama Department of Revenue has held the holiday, which is designed to provide the public the opportunity to purchase certain school supplies, computers and clothing without having to pay the state sales tax.

A list of exempt and taxable items can be found on the Alabama Department of Revenue website by typing “Back to School” in the search box.

The Council also voted unanimously to keep the insurance for town employees as is.

The decision came one meeting after the topic was discussed and tabled after certain members of the police department were asking for the town to look into how much it pays with the hope of the town paying the insurance for an employee’s family as well.

Thorsby public works director Terry Jackson informed the Council that the air conditioning unit at the Thorsby Dental Clinic had been replaced. The town owns the building.

According to Jackson, he cannot remember many repairs having to be done to the unit over the past couple of decades, so “the town got it’s money’s worth.”

Jackson also stated that the water pump at the town’s sewage lagoon has been working strong after going through some recent repairs.

The Council approved fire chief Josh Parker’s request to bring on Jeffrey Lance Hilyer as a possible fill-in with the department. Hilyer would only be used when needed.

Thorsby continues to mourn the death of town accountant Gary Moon. He was also very involved at Thorsby High School as an athletic booster and with the town’s parks and recreation.

For those looking to pay their respect the Moon family has asked in lieu of flowers to donate to a scholarship fund that bears Gary’s name.

The scholarship is designed to help a student in a low-income situation that would otherwise not have the financial means to go to college.

The minutes from the June 3 Council meeting were approved, as well as payment of the town’s bills and transferring of funds.
