Thorsby is preparing for its annual Independence Day fireworks show, which this year is scheduled for June 30.

It will once again be held at Richard Wood Park in downtown Thorsby with festivities beginning at 7 p.m.

The event will continue its tradition of combining both patriotism and religious beliefs.

“It is an opportunity for the churches of the community to come together,” event coordinator Jennifer Curry said.

According to Curry, churches from around the area are invited to take part in the joyous occasion.

The event is free and open to the public.

Although there will be some bleachers set up, attendees are allowed to bring their lawn chairs, so that they can move around and pick out the best spot to enjoy the singing and the fireworks.

A mixture of patriotic and religious songs will be sung under the pavilion at Richard Wood Park. This will take place while everyone waits for the sun to go down and the fireworks to begin.

Curry thanked the Thorsby Town Council for their continued support and for allowing such an event to happen.

“We feel blessed that we can still do things like this in small town America,” Curry said.

In previous years, the event has been held on the Wednesday or Sunday prior to Independence Day.

“It really depends on when the Fourth of July falls,” Curry said. “Sunday night always brings out a really nice crowd.”

Although it is too far in advance to get an accurate weather forecast for the event, the celebration has a tendency of receiving cooperation from Mother Nature.

“We’ve been fortunate to have only been rained out once,” Curry said.
