The Maplesville Red Devils secured another trip to the third round of the Class 1A state playoffs following a 21-14 victory on the road against Georgiana.

It was a fairly even contest, with the Maplesville ground game being the difference in the final outcome.

Christin Brown and Ryan Morrow shared the workload, with Brown leading the way with a game-high 181 yards and two touchdowns on 18 carries.
The Red Devils tied the game at 7-all with a 14-yard touchdown run from Brown late in the first quarter.

That score remained heading into halftime after a scoreless second quarter.

Just as it was to start the game, Georgiana scored first and jumped out to a 14-7 lead in the second half.

However, Brown evened up the game once again after he found the end zone for the second time on the night, this time from 15 yards out.

As the clock ticked in the fourth quarter, both teams were looking for what they hoped would be the final points of the contest.

Although Morrow’s stats were down from his video game-like average, he still gained 79 yards on 18 carries and punched in the game-winning touchdown from a yard out with 4:22 left.

The defense prevented Georgiana from answering the touchdown, and Maplesville clinched the victory.

Tristen Thetford led the Red Devils with 6.5 tackles, while Timothy Bradley and Noah Wells each had 1.5 tackles for a loss.

It was a quiet night for the Maplesville passing game, which was outgained by Georgiana. Jackson Abbott completed 3 of 7 passes for 26 yards and an interception.

The Red Devils (11-1) will host the Lanett Panthers (10-1), whose only loss was to Class 5A opponent Valley by six points.

It will be Maplesville’s first-ever meeting against Lanett, who won the Class 2A state title in 2017 before dropping down to Class 1A this year.
