Children and adults alike lined the sidewalks near Clanton City Hall and the Chilton County Courthouse on Halloween to participate in the Chilton County Chamber of Commerce’s annual Trick or Treat the Streets event.

The event encompasses about four blocks of real estate in downtown Clanton.

“I thought it was awesome,” said Chamber director Francine Wasden. “We had a wonderful turnout, and the weather was perfect.”

Traffic is blocked off to the area, and local authorities are on hand during the event.

“It is a great, safe way for kids to trick or treat,” Wasden said. “I loved seeing the children and parents come together and have a good time. It’s a great event for the community.”

A costume contest sponsored by Alabama Power was held as part of the event. Kids in three separate age groups came up on stage at Corner Park and showed off their outfits to the delight of the crowd.

“The costume contest was so much fun,” Wasden said. “The kids had a blast.”

Around 40 vendors signed up to participate in the event. Children and their parents or guardians lined up along the sidewalks, and once they reached a table set up by a vendor they received candy or other treats and in some cases got to play games.

“It gives (the vendors) some visibility and shows that they appreciate the communities’ business,” Wasden said. “It’s a good way for them to give back and also advertise.”

The Chilton County Children’s Club danced in the street to “Thriller” by Michael Jackson as a flash mob during the event.

“I would like to thank the Clanton Fire and Police departments and the rescue squad for working the event,” Wasden said. “I would also like to thank the city and everyone who helped get downtown ready for the event. It looked beautiful.”
