The Chilton County United Way handed out some end-of-year grants during its board meeting and lunch at the Jemison Intermediate School library on Oct. 16.
Board member Mary Mell Smith presented six grant checks as donations on behalf of the Chilton County United Way.
“Thank you for the work that you all have done,” Smith said.
The Chilton County Humane Society received $2,500; the Chilton/Clanton Public Library received its fourth quarter (one every three months) allocation of $250; Peach Foundation was given $500; the Chilton County 4-H program received a one-time allocation of $1,000 and the Chilton County Department of Human Resources was awarded a pair of grants with $800 going toward the foster children Christmas project and $1,500 designated for the department’s school supplies initiative.
“It’s a good thing when you know you can help people,” CCUW Campaign Coordinator Carol Fortuna said.
The meeting was held at JIS thanks to school principal D.J. Nix, who is a board member and offered up the site.
“Helping people” is what Nix said the United Way is all about.
Students from the Jemison High School culinary department prepared and served lunch.
Prior to lunch, members of the BIONIC Club at JIS said a few words to those in attendance about the club’s involvement. BIONIC is an acronym for Believe It Or Not I Care.
The Chilton County United Way also donated supplies such as bottled water, clothes, paper plates and plastic utensils, paper towels and stuffed animals to the Hurricane Michael relief effort along the Gulf Coast.
“The United Way does an awesome job in their goals and commitment,” Jemison Mayor Eddie Reed said.
