Jason Calhoun spoke on behalf of the Clanton Kiwanis Club and thanked the Clanton City Council, Mayor Billy Joe Driver and law enforcement for their support of this year’s county fair during the Oct. 8 Council meeting.

According to Calhoun, the fair was rained out two nights, but still made some money, which will be put back into the county through the Kiwanis Club’s initiatives to help local children.

“I don’t know if we would have a fair if not for the City of Clanton,” Calhoun said.

Clanton Police Chief Keith Maddox introduced the Council to a proposed agreement where the City of Clanton would assist financially if Max, a police dog used by department, were injured in the line of duty.

Max’s owner and handler is CPD officer David Clackley.

The department has used Max to do narcotics searches at schools, and he has also helped apprehend three suspects, including one instance that involved a stolen vehicle that was armed with a firearm.

The Council will look into the agreement and discuss it further at the next meeting on Oct. 22 at 5 p.m.

A medical leave request from Howard Barnett was approved for Oct. 12 to Oct. 29.

However, a medical leave request from Cornelius Jenkins was tabled. Councilman Sammy Wilson motioned to table until Jenkins provides the Council with a specific time frame of the leave.

Francine Wasden with the Chilton County Chamber of Commerce thanked the Council for everyone that attended the Chamber Luncheon with Gov. Kay Ivey.

Billy Singleton thanked the Council for their continued support of the airport.

The Council approved the minutes from the Sept. 24 meeting along with the payment of the bills.

Councilman Jeffrey Price was absent from the meeting.
