Clanton Police Department has confirmed one fatality in a car accident which occurred around 12:29 a.m. on Aug. 4.
Tonya Sherre Anderson, age 35, of Clanton was reportedly struck by a passing vehicle on Seventh St. S in Clanton.
CPD is still investigating the incident, but released a statement on its Facebook page around 7:15 p.m.
“CFD (Clanton Fire Department) and CPD units responded and located the subject who was deceased on the scene. CPD traffic homicide and detectives responded to conduct an investigation,” Capt. David Clackley wrote in the statement. “It was determined that Tonya Sherre Anderson (35 of Clanton) had been struck by a passing vehicle. The investigation is still ongoing and at this time it is believed that the incident was accidental and that the driver may not be aware that they struck a person. CPD is asking for help in identifying any potential witnesses of the incident.”
Based on surveillance of the scene, CPD was initially looking for a “newer 4 door Chevrolet dually which was pulling a trailer. The trailer had a pickup truck and a race car on the back. The race car has been described as having a yellow front clip and red back clip.” The department has since received information leading to the identification of this vehicle.
On Aug. 6, CPD updated on Facebook stating that the Chevrolet dually was not involved in the accident.
“We now know exactly which vehicle struck the subject and will now begin identifying the vehicle using the many different videos that we have collected,” Clackley wrote. ” This process may take a while but the possibility of making an id is promising. We ask for continued prayers for those affected by this incident.”
The department is also trying to identify other vehicles that were in the area at the time.
“We are in the process of obtaining better video for release but currently it is unavailable,” Clackley said. “If you have any information about this vehicle or know of someone who may have been involved in the accident, please contact CPD as soon as possible.”
He thanked first responders and Alabama Department of Transportation for their assistance in response to the scene.
“Please keep all of those touched by this tragedy in your prayers,” Clackley wrote in the statement.
