A project to make Clanton sidewalks more compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act has begun.
The Alabama Department of Transportation project on portions of Alabama Highway 22 and 145 in expected to be complete by the end of July, John McWilliams, public relations officer for ALDOT, said.
“They are removing some curbs and sidewalks and enhancing crosswalks,” McWilliams said.
The curbs at the end of a section are being replaced with sloped sidewalk to make it easier for a wheelchair to go from one sidewalk to another.
Sidewalk projects are usually completed in conjunction with a road resurfacing project.
However, McWilliams said sidewalks are evaluated if there has not been a project in a while.
“It’s just time for it to be updated,” McWilliams said.
The Clanton project is a part of a larger ALDOT project spanning select state highways in Chilton and Bibb Counties.
The entire project will cost $288,000, 80 percent of this is Federal Highway Administration funds and 20 percent is state funding.
