CCHS claims county golf title

Turner Watley shot a low round of 74 to win the 2018 Chilton County Golf Tournament as an individual.
Watley is the lone senior in the CCHS golf program and played in the final county tournament of his career.
His score was eight shots clear of second place and helped the Tigers win the team competition with a combined score of 323 by its top four golfers.
“I was pretty focused,” Watley said. “I just felt dialed in.”
CCHS had four golfers shoot in the 80s. The group was led by Andrew Henson and Hunter Smith who shot a round of 82, while Jack Parnell and Carson Watley each posted a score of 85.
After a solid start to the day, Watley double-bogeyed the par-4 fourth hole and could not help but get a little worried.
However, he bounced right back with a birdie on the fifth hole.
According to Watley, that’s when he knew the possibility existed for a stellar round of golf.
“I had a composure out there [on the course],” Watley said.
High winds played a factor for every golfer on the course. It was something that needed to be taken into consideration before each shot.
Having played golf since he was 13 years old, Watley had plenty of experience in a variety of weather conditions. This allowed him to maintain his aggressive style despite the less than ideal conditions.
“If you haven’t played in wind before, it’s hard to know how to handle it,” Watley said. “It’s important to adjust club lengths to the conditions.”
Although a 74 is impressive, the lowest round that Watley has ever shot is 70.
