The Maplesville Red Devils boys basketball team will have a new look when they take the court next season after receiving a donation from Guardian Credit Union for new uniforms.

Jessica Minardi, branch manager at the Clanton and Maplesville Guardian locations, was at the school April 4 to present a check for $1,680 to head coach Stacy McGehee.

According to McGehee, the team had picked out some uniforms online and asked Guardian if they could help pay for some of the cost.

To the delight of the players and coaches, Guardian offered to pay the entire amount needed.

“That was pretty awesome,” McGehee said. “We just had an opportunity to do this and are very grateful to have a sponsor that would help us. It saves the program a lot of money.”

It had been a couple of years since the Red Devils’ uniforms had been updated.

Two to three years is the typical life of a uniform, McGehee said.

“We’ve already been designing them and are just about ready to order,” McGehee said.

The cost will cover new game uniforms as well as some practice jerseys.

McGehee has made sure to include the players throughout the process of selecting a uniform combination.

He realizes that the players will be the ones wearing whatever final decision is made and has relied heavily on their feedback.

“They all seem real excited about the style that we have picked out for next year,” McGehee said.

Next year will be McGehee’s second year at Maplesville. The uniforms are just another positive step as he continues to make his mark on the basketball program.

“We want to get a good product out [on the court] that represents the school and the community well,” McGehee said. “When you look good, you play good. We’re going to see if that holds true.”
