It is a short two months until Relay For Life 2018 — set for April 27 in downtown Clanton.
In preparation of the big event, Chilton County Relay For Life is hosting two youth contests that will exhibit artistic talent and capture community support for finding a cure to cancer.
Chilton County schools are in on the fun.
Kids’ Lap T-Shirt Design Contest
The 2018 Kid’s Lap T-shirt is relying on talented students to create its design, Jeannie Smith of the American Cancer Society said.
“Many years ago, we had a Kids’ Lap at Relay, and the kids submitted a drawing for the Kids’ Lap T-Shirt, and we’re going to bring that back,” Smith said.
Designs can be composed on an 8.5 by 11 inches sheet of white paper and submitted along with a form to teachers.
The winning design will be honored at the RFL event, where T-shirts in both youth and adult sizes will be sold for $5 on a first-come-first-serve basis. T-shirts can be preordered with checks payable to Chilton County Relay For Life and entrusted to teachers by March 16.
Luminaria Decorating Contest
Students can purchase luminaria bags to decorate at home and submit to RFL for the Event Leadership Team to review for judging.
“We’ll have a winner from each school that will be recognized at the Relay event, and then we’ll have an overall winner from those winners that will be recognized at the event,” Smith said.
To participate, students should submit to their teachers a $5 check payable to Chilton County Relay For Life. The luminaria bags will be sent home with the students for decoration.
Decorated bags must be returned to the schools by April 16.
“So, lots of great things coming up for the kids to get on board and get involved,” Smith said of the contests. “I hope we get a lot of good response.”
