The Maplesville Red Devils started the baseball season by winning both games of a doubleheader at home against Indian Springs on Feb. 20.

Both games followed a similar script with a lot of offense and culminated in a pair of one-run victories for Maplesville.

Game One went into extra innings, and Wallace Hobbs was the hero after an RBI single in walk-off fashion.

Maplesville opened up a five-run lead through four innings, but Indian Springs was able to fight back and eventually tie the game in the seventh inning.

Jackson Abbott started Game One for the Red Devils and pitched into the sixth inning allowing three runs on two hits while striking out 10 batters.

Runs came even more rapidly in Game Two, as Indian Springs scored 10 runs in the first inning.

However, Maplesville was able to continually chip away at the lead and completed the massive comeback to win 13-12 in the late innings.

“The biggest thing we can take away from these games is not faltering when we face adversity,” Maplesville head coach Clay Entrekin said. “I loved the fight that our guys showed tonight.”

Maplesville senior Brent Schoener was locked in at the plate during both games. He went 6-for-8 in the doubleheader.

“We are extremely young and have some growing pains ahead of us that will only be fixed in time,” Entrekin said. “We have a few days off to really focus on what we need to do to be more successful. Baseball is a marathon, and we all must run it together.”
