It was a fairly quick meeting for the Thorsby Town Council on Jan. 22.

The primary resolution that was passed was the Council’s approval to take part in the Alabama severe weather preparedness sales tax holiday weekend Feb. 23-25.

It is a statewide initiative that is in its seventh year of existence.

The holiday officially begins at 12:01 a.m. on Feb. 23 and ends at midnight on Feb. 25.

There are certain rules and regulations that go along with the holiday, which allows shoppers to stock up without paying the state’s four-percent sales tax on common supplies costing less than $60.

The lone exception to the $60 limit is the purchase of generators that cost $1,000 or less.

The Council’s resolution also waves the town’s additional tax if the rules listed above apply.

According to the Alabama Retail Association website, items that will be tax free include: batteries, weather radios, flashlights, tarps, plywood or other items for protecting windows, ice chests/coolers, ice packs, first aid kits, as well as fire, smoke and carbon dioxide detectors, portable generators and cords.
