Dorothy Dean Nelson (Dot) Wood

Dorothy Dean Nelson (Dot) Wood passed away Thursday, Jan. 4 at the age of 87.

Dot is survived by her devoted husband of 63 years, Judson Carey Wood; daughters, Jennice Threlkeld and Yvonne Huneycutt; grandsons, Geoffrey and Bradford Threlkeld; great-grandson, Tristan Threlkeld; brother, Wayne Nelson, and all their families. As part of a family of eight siblings and eight stepsiblings, she has a large extended family who will also miss her dearly.

Dot was born and raised in Clanton, the fifth child of nine of Monroe and Lola Nelson. She was graduated from Howard College, now Samford University. In her profession as a bookkeeper, she worked at Glendale Baptist Church, Woodmont Baptist Church and, for the majority of her career, for the Nashville Orthopedic Clinic. A committed Christian, Dot was active at Woodmont Baptist Church, and subsequently at Brentwood Baptist Church. As a couple, Jud and Dot were instrumental in the founding of Brentwood Baptist Church.

Dot loved her Lord Jesus deeply and will be remembered as a praying woman. She cared deeply about the people that came into her life, whether it be her family, her business colleagues, the Sunday School classes she taught, her church friends, the friends of her two daughters whom she constantly welcomed into her home and even the occasional stranger needing a place to stay. Many lives were touched and transformed by her godly life and prayers.

There will be a celebration of Dot’s life will be on Saturday, Jan. 13 at 3:30 p.m. at Brentwood Baptist Church. A visitation will be held ahead of the service to receive family and friends from 2-3:15 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Dot’s name to the ministry of Servant Group International (Servantgroup.org), 506 Tanksley Avenue, Nashville, TN 37211. Servant Group is a Christian organization that serves the needs of Muslim communities in the name of Jesus in Nashville and around the world, with a special focus on the Kurdish community.
