Thorsby’s varsity girls basketball team held off a late charge against B.B. Comer to pick up a big 38-34 road victory.

The Rebels trailed 19-15 at the halftime break, but kicked it up a notch in the third quarter and outscored B.B. Comer 13-3 to go ahead 28-22 with one quarter to play.

Defensivly, Thorsby disrupted the opposing attack by making sure it was aware of where B.B. Comer’s top scorer was on the court at all times.

“She was one of the only ones that really scored [last meeting], so we knew that we had to stop her,” Thorsby guard Hannah Smith said.

The Rebels held the Tigers to one less point than it did in the first matchup between the teams in Thorsby on Nov. 27.

“We had it in our heads that we had to play smart defense,” Smith said.

However, the final score was much closer as this time Thorsby was the team making the nearly one-hour trip to Sylacauga.

As expected when playing on the road, B.B. Comer hung around and found a late spark, which was aided by a stretch of cold shooting and turnovers that the Rebels had done a decent job limiting up until that point.

Carlee Wyatt and Smith were the primary scorers for Thorsby, as the two combined account for all but four of the Rebels points in the game.

As guards, they both looked in control with the ball in their hands and seemed to always be looking to create something.

“Towards the end, we kind of slowed it down and were just trying to work together to hit our shots,” Smith said.

Wyatt seemed to continually come up with timely shots. None were more important than a pair of free throws, with less than a minute to go and the weight of the game on her shoulders, to ice the contest.

Wyatt led all scorers with 22 points, while Smith finished with 12 points.
