Snowfall is lightening up in Chilton County, but ice is a concern as temperatures drop overnight, a recent update from the National Weather Service of Birmingham revealed.

Due to underestimated snow accumulation, more counties have been added to the winter weather warning and advisory, which is in place until midnight tonight, according to Meredith Wyatt of NWS Birmingham.

While accumulation and snowfall is expected to decrease late afternoon, temperatures are forecasted to drop as evening hours approach, dipping down into the lower 30s and possibly upper 20s, beginning around 8 or 9 p.m., according to Wyatt.

“There’s a potential for that accumulation that’s still there [after snowfall ceases] to refreeze onto roadways,” Wyatt said, who emphasized the danger of black ice.

Meanwhile, slush builds on roadways.

“If you don’t have to be on the roads, I would advise against that,” Wyatt said. “Just stay home, enjoy the snow.”

No further precipitation is forecasted for the rest of the weekend, although that is subject to change. Temperatures for tomorrow are expected to remain in the upper 30s and lower 40s, thawing out remaining snow accumulation.

“If anyone has any observations or has anything to report … that’s very helpful to us,” Wyatt said.
