A new activity at the Chilton-Clanton Library gives children the opportunity to write a letter or draw a picture to thank a veteran.

Supplies are available in the children’s area until Nov. 30.

“We are calling it ‘Thank You, Veterans’ and … they can either do a card or write a letter,” Library Director Savannah Kitchens said.

The Circulation Desk is collecting the completed projects to be sent to Operation Gratitude, which will then send them to veterans.

“We were inspired to do this in the month of November because of Veterans Day and then, of course, we have Thanksgiving, so we are saying thank you to the people who served our country,” Kitchens said.

Some of the children who have participated so far have drawn pictures of homes. Kitchens said some have had parents write a note for them to accompany their drawing.

The letters and cards will be sent on Dec. 1. However, Kitchens said the library is also providing information about Operation Gratitude for those who might want to send something in the future.

Kitchens said she will be asking the organization to send the letters to veterans from Alabama who have served in the past, rather than currently serving personnel.

“Veterans really need support in the community,” Kitchens said.

She said the activity gives children something good to do while their parents are using the computers or looking for books at the library.
