The town of Thorsby will be getting some new utility vehicles in the near future in the form of Dodges.

The town council approved to accept a bid from Stokes to purchase three trucks, a Dodge 1500 4×4, Dodge 2500 service body truck and a Dodge 4500 dump bed for $96,518.

The council chose Stokes’ bid over another bid for Fords as opposed to Dodges. The bid from Stokes was $22,610.54 cheaper than the competing bid.

A Takeuchi mini excavator with a cab was also approved for purchase by the council for $47,337. It will come with a two-year warranty.

Takeuchi was chosen over other bids after it was confirmed to be the most affordable option by public works director Terry Jackson.

The council made a decision to use asphalt millings instead or crushed rock on Mary Street, which will avoid the possibility of the street being closed.

Thorsby is in the early stages of adapting to its new garbage truck and cans.

“I expect it to speed up as we learn more about that truck,” Jackson said.

The truck is specially designed to pick up the cans and require only one employee to operate.

“I’ve had so many people mention about how good the new trash cans look,” councilwoman Chastity Chapman said.

In other news from the meeting, the Council:

• Approved Rux Carter Insurance in conjunction with Trident to handle the town’s insurance. The town will save around $9,000 with the switch from its current provider Alabama Municipal Insurance Corporation.
• Approved a bid to hire Danny’s Tree Service for $1,500, which includes cleaning and hauling away any debris associated with the job.
• Councilman Neil Benson and councilwoman Marilyn Collins were absent from the meeting.
• Approved the minutes from the Sept. 18 council meeting, Sept. 7 planning commission meeting and Sept. 11 Swedish Fest meeting.
