The Chilton Auburn Club delivered wagonfuls of school supplies to Chilton County elementary, intermediate and high schools on Sept. 5.
The deliveries began around 8:30 a.m. and concluded around noon, according to Glenda Mims, secretary of the Chilton Auburn Club.
Superintendent of Education Tommy Glasscock accompanied the club representatives for a portion of the route.
“We as a club do community service activities, and this is one of them,” Mims said, adding that the club’s more prominent community service activity is sponsorship of a Raptor Center program from Auburn University for Chilton County third graders.
“This is the first time we’ve done the school supplies delivery,” Mims said.
School supplies can be expensive, Mary Clyde Huff, vice president of the club, said.
The Chilton Auburn Club recognized a need, and set to work fixing it.
School supply donations were collected at the Chilton Auburn Club kickoff party on Aug. 24, Mims said.
And there were plenty to go around.
Huff said school supplies were delivered to counselors’ offices at the following schools:
- Clanton Elementary School
- Clanton Intermediate School
- Jemison Elementary School
- Jemison Intermediate School
- Thorsby High School
- Isabella High School
- Maplesville High School
- Verbena High School
Huff said school counselors will distribute the supplies according to needs.
The Chilton Auburn Club funds three scholarships of $5,500 each to three incoming Auburn University students from Chilton County every year.
According to Chilton Auburn Club President Nyra Luster, the club is one of the oldest clubs within the Auburn Alumni Association.
