The YMCA of Chilton County received a $1,500 donation from the Chilton County Juvenile Court Administrative Fund toward its summer camp programing during a presentation on June 13.

“This is money that comes from court filing fees and supervision fees to the juvenile court,” District Judge Chris Speaks said. “The donations that we give our designated to organizations that help at-risk kids.”

He said the YMCA is one of the organizations that qualifies as a recipient.

“They’ve been giving to the Y for several years,” Speaks said.

YMCA Director Lori Patterson said the funds would be used for field trips and supplies for the Monday reading program.

“I bought sets of novels for the children, so it will go toward that,” Patterson said. “Each child has two novels that they have been reading with a volunteer.”

Megan Bowles and Ann Bell are the camp directors this year. In addition to the reading focus, Bowles said campers are enjoying swimming, cooking, gardening, art projects and field trips.
