Two suspects, Gage Foster Swaim and Kathryn Marie Smith, are being held in the Chilton County jail and have been charged by the Chilton County Sheriff’s Office with multiple offenses related to their reported evasion of police on March 23 in Jemison.
Swaim is being charged with receiving stolen property, two counts of burglary, four counts of attempted theft of property, attempting to elude police and attempted assault. His bond is set at $56,500. At press time there remained a possibility of additional charges.
Kathryn Marie Smith is being charged with receiving stolen property and attempting to elude. Her bond is set at $10,750.
The pair reportedly evaded police in a pursuit on Chilton County 29 in a stolen vehicle. Then, Swaim reportedly tried to back into Sgt. Brandon Wright of the Jemison Police Department with a stolen police vehicle before fleeing the scene, abandoning the vehicle and attempting to steal multiple vehicles at a residence.
The couple is from Indiana. Chilton County Sheriff John Shearon said the distance the suspects have travelled and their charges in Chilton County made him concerned there may be other agencies looking for the suspects between Indiana and Jemison. He said that “it could be nothing, but it could be who-knows-what once we get word out and agencies in other areas start investigating.”
