Black-eyed peas on the menu

The Black-Eyed Pea Luncheon hosted by Senior Connection has become a community tradition since it began taking place annually four years ago.
This year was no different, as various members from throughout the area gathered during their lunch breaks on Wednesday, Jan. 18.
The lunch featured traditional southern favorites, such as black-eyed peas as the main dish accompanied by cole slaw, cornbread and a selection of desserts.
“It’s important to support your community, which is why we are all here today,” said Tina Atchison with Southern Care.
According to Atchison, the Senior Connection is a place for older residents to remain involved and provides outlets for activities that would not otherwise be available.
“We’ve really enjoyed helping to grow this building into what it has become,” Martha Davis said.
The Black-Eyed Pea Luncheon is one of several fundraisers that the organization holds throughout the year with the proceeds helping toward operating costs and other necessary functions.
“That’s why we do it,” said Atchison, as she pointed to the Senior Connection stage where the Perfect Peaches were performing one of their line dance routines.
Leading up to the luncheon was the first time that Senior Connection had sent phone messages about the event to residents as a remainder.
437 calls were made, said Senior Connection Director Vanessa McKinney. The calling system will be used for the majority of events moving forward.
“There was a steady line [of customers] coming in from the start,” McKinney said. “I believe that the calls will only continue to help get the word out even more in the future.”
It was the first community event of the year for Senior Connection with the Chili Cook-Off shortly around the corner on Feb. 11 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
“I enjoy the people they are just so sweet,” said Belda Coburn with Community Action.
