The numbers are in and in 2016 the Clanton Fraternal Order of Police and Clanton Lions Club were able to provide assistance to 40 families and 150 people in Chilton County over the holidays.

“Next year we want to do even more,” said Vicky Jenrette, with the Lions Club. “The things that we do stay local with the focus of helping our own in times of need.”

The organizations teamed up as part of the Operation Santa Claus program, which was designed to provide toys and other essentials for families in need of assistance in those areas.

According to Jenrette, the program had some waning years with the recession, but this year has seen an increase in community support.

Nine boxes were set up at various local businesses and served as drop-off locations.

Over 400 items, such as canned food or boxes were gathered through the efforts of the Lions Club.

Chilton County Sheriff John Shearon, Clanton FOP President Warren Garris and Lions Club President Jason Griffin are each deeply involved with helping those in the community through the mission at Operation Christmas Child.

According to Jenrette, the Sheriff’s Office had always assisted in Operation Santa Claus, but took over the project in 2002.

Businesses even without a box set out in front were able to find ways to make a difference.

Adient Clanton Inc. (formerly Johnson Controls Inc.) participated in their own unique way, as employees with the company provided 554 toys toward the cause.

Another business that chipped in its services was Sam’s Auction Depot in Thorsby, which collected its share of toys as well.

“There were containers piled up with toys,” Jenrette said. “It was quite a sight.”
