Maplesville on Friday finally surrendered a point but still earned its third easy win of the season, 65-12 over visiting Sunshine.
No one had scored on the Red Devils (3-0, 2-0 Class 1A, Region 3) in their first two games of the season, but Sunshine’s Shaunquille McCalpine ran past the Maplesville defense for 43 yards and a touchdown with 6:04 remaining in the first quarter.
The Tigers (0-3, 0-3) also scored on a Tevin Griffin 3-yard run with 2:25 left in the game, after a 69-yard jaunt by McCalpine against mostly Maplesville’s 8th graders.
The rest of the game, though, belonged to the No. 4 Red Devils.
On the second play of Sunshine’s first possession, the snap went over the quarterback’s head, and Maplesville recorded a safety.
Brinttain Hill ran the free kick all the way back to the Sunshine 17-yard line. Chris Bailey leaped for a pass from quarterback Matt Hamner on the next play, caught it and then dove for the end zone.
Casey Atchison’s extra point made it 9-0 Red Devils less than one minute into the game.
Maplesville in the first half would also score on a 19-yard run by Hunter McCay, an 8-yard pass from Bailey to Hamner with the Sunshine offense on the field thinking it was their ball, a 60-yard punt return by Bailey, a 5-yard run by Bailey and a 36-yard run by Cameron Morrow.
Maplesville wound up with 260 total rushing yards, and Hamner finished 5-of-8 passing for 100 yards.
Bailey accounted for 160 total yards, including five yards on an interception return.
With mostly reserves in the game for the second half, Maplesville scored on a 3-yard run by Demetrius Parker, a 1-yard run by Hill and a 1-yard run by Marvin Brown.
Atchison was good on all the point-after tries.
