The United Methodist Women at Clanton First United Methodist Church are hosting their annual Soup Day on Nov. 8 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The event will be held beside the church’s main building in the Helen E. Parrish Activity Center.

Proceeds from the day’s sales will be used for various missions projects that FUMC supports. The women will be selling $6 meals, which will include vegetable soup, cornbread, dessert and a drink. Takeout is an option as well.

“The soup is always just killer,” said Marsha Littleton, the communications chairperson at FUMC.

Women from the UMW group start preparations early Monday morning, cutting up vegetables and starting the soup. Then on Tuesday morning, they get up early to make the cornbread and other goodies together.

In addition to the meal, other home-baked goods and handmade crafts will be for sale.

According to Littleton, the event has been a mainstay in the community for many years.

“They were doing this when I joined 30 years ago, and my mother participated in it before that,” said Littleton.

“We’ve never had any soup left over,” said Elizabeth Cleckler, head of the event. “We’re making more soup this year than before.”

Cleckler said she has been in charge of the event for 8 years now, and hopes that people will make a stop by the event after they participate in the elections.

“We know that this year’s going to be a big election, and we always try to have it on Election Day. We hope people will come by while they’re out to vote,” said Cleckler.

To get your soup and other treats on Election Day, go by the Helen E. Parrish Activity Center at 207 9th Street North in Clanton. All proceeds go to missions.
