Streets in Clanton will soon receive an upgrade after the Clanton City Council approved a bid placed by Wiregrass Construction Company for a project that will involve the paving and milling of city streets.

Details of the project are still in the process of getting finalized, but the Council took the next step in seeing that the paving project is completed.

The Council had a decision to make between Wiregrass Construction that offered asphalt at $75 per ton and Dunn Construction Company, which presented a bid of $93.85 per ton.

Councilwoman Mary Mell Smith motioned for Wiregrass and Councilman Sammy Wilson seconded the motion.

Mayor Billy Joe Driver said that about 11,000 tons of asphalt was previously estimated for the project.

The meeting opened with members of both the Clanton police and fire departments coming to the front of the room to receive a prayer and thanks for their service, as a response to the lives lost during the sniper incident in Dallas on July 7.

“We as a body are trying to do what we think is right,” Driver said.

In other news from the meeting, the Council:

•Approved the hire of Cecil Abbott in a part-time position in the beautification department.

•Extended the lease for the fairgrounds property to 99 years and to pay half the purchase cost of the Alton Wright property.

•Approved the hire of James Scottie Mims as a truck driver in the sanitation department.

•Approved the minutes from the previous meeting and to pay the bills.

•Approved Balch & Bingham as a sub-committee to form a development authority.

•Approved purchase of a garbage truck off the NJPA bid for $154,305.75.
