The Chilton County High School football team is in full summer workout mode, and the preseason competition time has started.

The Tigers traveled to Marbury High School for the Bulldog 7-on-7 Invitational and came away with a 5-1 record and the championship trophy.

Griffin Green, Jaylen Martin and Gab Jackson among others created turnovers for the Tigers with timely interceptions; and Kendall Davis, Hunter Henson and Keaton Sullivan along with a host of others scored for the offense.

“Both sides had to contribute and compete for us to win this thing,” coach Brian Bradford said. “We had some ups and downs, but overall we responded when we needed.”

The Tigers went 2-1 in pool play and 3-0 in the round robin single elimination tournament, defeating the host team Marbury in the championship.

It wasn’t all about the skill guys as Marbury also held a lineman competition during the event. Chilton County’s James “Bud” Dunigan came away as the best overall lineman.

“It was nice to see one of our guys get that trophy,” defensive coordinator Ryan Poe said. “They toil every day with little recognition. Coach Booth has done a great job with those guys in a short time, and it is already showing up.

“7-on-7 for the defense can be frustrating because we can’t hit and some bad habits can be formed, but the chance to compete is always welcomed.”

Chilton County will continue competition by hosting its own 7-on-7 on July 11. Billingsley, Verbena, Calera and Marbury are confirmed to participate in the event.
